Captain Cook Memorial Statue Plan

Do not board here!

Designed in collaboration with Jeremy min and thammathad jesadachet.

"Do Not Board Here" is a simple spatial intervention created to act as a commentary on the absurd nature of glorifying colonizers with memorial statues in past colonies. As a group, we designed a sign that looks like an everyday road sign at a distance but upon closer inspection, it read “DO NOT BOARD HERE’’ with a logo of a crossed-out ship. The sign was placed at two different sites, one at the Queen Victoria Memorial statue in Colombo and another at the Captain Cook memorial in Melbourne. The subtle sign draws attention to the hidden grip colonization still has in these communities. We looked into this particular topic after looking into the work of Nicholas Galanin. He dug a grave for the Captain Cook statue in Sydney as part of a broader pushback against monuments to colonial figures.

Location: Captain cook memorial statue, St Kilda, Melbourne.
Queen Victoria Memorial statue, Colombo, Sri Lanka
