Women's safety; Let's not sweep it under the rug

Designed in collaboration with Amy Carey and Meghana Reddy.

“Women and girls often perceive public places, particularly at night, to be unsafe places for them. This is despite crime statistics that clearly show they are most likely to experience violence at the hands of family members in the home, and least likely to be assaulted by strangers in public.” -A Right to the Night Survey

Our installation focuses on women’s safety in both public landscapes and also domestic environments. We’ve collected a series of stories and survey responses that reflect women’s voices in both Australia and Sri Lanka. We wish to give these women a voice to educate the public community hoping to achieve complete equality.

With this installation, we hoped to create a safe space for women to seek help as well as educate the public on the many forms in which domestic violence occurs. One of the main inspirations for our concept was the 'This is What it Feels Like.' interactive installation by Terra Lopez in which she used speakers to recreate the experience of being catcalled.

Location: Red stair amphitheatre, south bank, Melbourne.
