ZEST

The project ‘Zest’ aims to encourage users to be more aware of their daily sensorial interactions with mundane objects through reimagining the experience of using a towel. Through a series of mapping exercising the parts of the towel which have the most contact with the body were identified. Fabric in these regions was replaced with lemon slices and cellophane. This transformed the dry and rough tactile experiences with a wet and moist one. The crumpling sound produced by the cellophane added an auditory aspect to the encounter. Since the sound is associated with the dried leaves it creates this illusion that the expected experience would be a dry one but in reality, it is a moist one. For this design, I drew inspiration from Daily Haptics by Marie Rouillon. She created a series of cups that looked the same but felt very different.
